COLORS OF THE SAN GABRIELS

Backroads with fall foliage in October and November

West to east in the San Gabriel Mountains:

  • Pine Canyon Road [N2] from Old Ridge Route at Quail Lake Junction [SR 138] through Elizabeth Lake

  • Soledad Canyon Road south side of Frwy 14 from Bee Canyon through Acton

  • Angeles Forest Highway from Upper Big Tujunga Road [Camp Colby turnoff] to Mill Creek Summit

  • Chilao Picnic Area loop from Visitor Center to campgrounds

  • Pallet Creek Road to Valyermo Road to Big Road Creek Road to end of pavement

  • Big Pines Highway from Valyermo Road to SR 2, Angeles Crest Highway, through Wrightwood

  • SR 138 east from Cajon Junction to Lake Silverwood and Summit Valley to Mojave River Forks [not in San Gabriels, but has more ash trees than are found there]

Outside of the San Gabriels

Color is provided by ash, bigleaf maple, buckeye, cottonwoods, black and valley oak, sycamore and willows; berries, roses, and rabbitbrush.
